    Altec 7180a Amp?

Anybody familiar with the Altec 7180A...also known as EV AP2800?

Just scored one of these at a very reasonable price. Has a bit of a QSC look to it...possibly re-badged for Altec and EV.

Will try it myself when I can hook up some speakers that can handle a 400+W amp. At the moment, I have 755As on line...can't risk it.

    Any info appreciated.

Thanks...have the manual and will have the amp in hand tonight.

Was more curious about comments on musical quality for home use.
I'm not much of a big SS amp guy. In fact, I am way more likely to run 4.37W tubes than 437W!

Is this a US made amp, or Korean?

The newer EV's are German (Dynacord) but have seen some Korean ones. It definitely isn't a QSC. Although some Altec/EV amps are similar in circuitry, am almost certain QSC never OEM'ed them anything.
Your neighbors called. They like your music.

Define "newer"......... since we're talking an Altec label, it goes back to the late 90's at least....... That's pre-Dynacord and EV being under the same ownership isn't it? I know the Altec mixer/amps (17xx, I think) that is commonly seen with 9444X's are Korean. Maybe those are earlier 90's or late 80? The Korean Altec stuff is what made me think this EV/Altec amp may be Korean sourced, too.

a good reason the have some old bose speakers

    around the house.

'first test' for untried amps, or other experiments.

Ironic that I started this thread and I was in Korea while the discussion continued. Got back last night.

The amp was made in USA c. 1996. Quite solidly put together. I fired it up on a "disposable" pair of JBL bookshelf speakers I found at a thrift shop for $15.

The amp sounded "good" but perhaps not what I would want for hi-fi compared to say my 300B amp. I'll bet it sure can play loud though.
